Subaru is switching vehicles at the third round of the Japan Super Taikyu Series. The High Performance X Future Concept—basically a Subaru WRX with experimental running gear—will takeover racing duties from the rear-wheel drive Subaru BRZ.
Introduced in 2021, the special ST-Q class was introduced for manufacturer-developed, non-homologated special racing vehicles. The other Japanese carmakers competing in this class are Toyota (hydrogen-powered GR Corolla and GR86 fueled with carbon-neutral synthetic fuel), Mazda (Mazda3 fueled with biodiesel), Nissan (Nissan Z GT4 prototype), and Honda (Civic Type R fueled with carbon-neutral fuel).
Subaru entered the BRZ running on the same carbon-neutral synthetic fuel in 2022.
This year, the BRZ’s racing duties will be taken over by the High Performance X Future Concept. Although it looks like the current Subaru WRX, it will serve as a rolling laboratory for Subaru engineers to refine their trademark Symmetrical AWD system, particularly in the areas of “AWD Drive Force Control.”
Engineers also look to see the effect of running synthetic carbon neutral fuel would have on turbocharged engines.
The High Performance X Future Concept runs on the same FA24 single-scroll turbo engine used by the production Subaru WRX but tuned to produce over 300 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Like the Subaru BRZ, it will run on carbon neutral fuel. This engine mated to a 6-speed manual with a Driver Control Center Differential or DCCD all-wheel drive system.
