Despite being engineered primarily for developing markets, both Kia and Suzuki sent their Pegas (Soluto) and Ertiga to be tested at the Global NCAP.
With standards which are considered stricter and more exacting than those in ASEAN, it comes as no surprise that both models fared not-so-well.
The China-made Kia Pegas/Soluto scored a two-star (21.69 out of 34) adult occupant protection rating and a four-star (38 out of 49) child occupant protection rating during its battery of tests.
Global NCAP noted that the body shell was unstable, particularly the foot well area. The structure is not capable of withstanding further loadings, they noted.
Like its Philippine spec, it offers two front airbags as standard offering good protection to the driver’s head and neck. However, the passenger’s chest showed only marginal protection, same with occupants’ knees. The passenger’s right knee showed weak protection since it can impact with “dangerous structures” behind the dashboard.
For its side impact test, the head and abdomen showed adequate protection, chest showed marginal protection, and pelvis showed good protection.
Due to its lack of side airbags, the side pole impact test was not done.
Meanwhile, child occupant protection showed four-star performance. Both dummies were installed rearward facing using the ISOFIX anchorages and support leg offering full protection in frontal and side impact tests. The car offers three-point belts in all seating positions as standard.
On the other hand, the Suzuki Ertiga had a one-star (23.63 out of 34) adult occupancy protection rating and a two-star (19.4 out of 49) child occupant protection rating.
The Ertiga may come with side-impact protection embedded into its doors, but the Global NCAP still showed that the body shell was “unstable.” It cannot withstand further loadings, per the safety agency.
The India-made Ertiga has two front airbags only—like the Philippine market spec. This allowed the Ertiga to show good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck. The driver’s chest showed marginal protection, passenger’s chest showed good protection. Driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they can impact with dangerous structures behind the fascia, like the Soluto.
Side impact protection showed good protection for head, pelvis, and abdomen, with adequate protection for the chest. Like the Soluto, due to its lack of side airbags, the side pole impact test was not done.
During its evaluation tests, the Ertiga’s passenger seatbelt pre-tensioner failed to work properly.
Child occupant protection was poor for the 18-month-old dummy. The Child Restraint System (CRS) was installed in the forward-facing position, whilst best practice indicates a rearward facing position offers better protection for this age group. Side impact child protection, however, was good.
The Ertiga only offers a lap belt in the rear center position which explains the significant points loss in child occupant protection. The Ertiga offers standard ISOFIX anchorages.

ReplyDeleteThese Global NCAP results for Ertiga that is lower than of ASEAN NCAP kinda questions the reputation of the latter. I mean, they gave the Veloz 5 stars with just 2 airbags with TSS for the Indonesian market.
ReplyDeleteYikes.. 4 star ng ASEAN NCAP is equivalent to 1 star lang pala sa Global NCAP. That says a lot of how ASEAN customers are treated.
ReplyDeleteIndian made Suzuki Ertiga (the one that GNCAP tested) is totally different than the made in Indonesia Suzuki Ertiga
DeleteSteel body structure of the Indonesia sourced and produced Ertiga and XL7 are much better.
Milagro, walang chinese car lovers ang siningit ang product nila sa comment section
ReplyDeleteKia Soiuto is a made in China car developed by Kia Yueda China 7 years ago
DeleteIt's still in production in China as there's a huge demand for the Soluto in Latin American markets
