Toyota Rocked By Vehicle Certification Scandal Anew

Toyota’s vehicle certification scandal is worse than originally thought as Japanese regulators have uncovered more wrongdoings.

As a result, Toyota has received a correction order from the Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to make drastic reforms to ensure conformity with the regulations in the future.

In addition to the cases reported last June, the MLIT has uncovered eight new cases involving seven vehicles through their on-site investigations. Toyota has halted the shipment of two of these vehicles—the Toyota Noah and Voxy in Japan—while they re-confirm their compliance with the appropriate local standards.

Vehicles for export markets such as the RAV4, Camry, Harrier, and Lexus LM are not covered as they’ve been certified outside Japan in accordance with the United Nations Agreement on Mutual Recognition. Customers of these vehicles do not need to stop using the vehicles.

During its investigation, the RAV4 has been found to have been tested using loading blocks that differ from the regulations and the seat locking mechanism parts differ from those used in mass production. Meanwhile, for the Lexus LM, its rear door lining used a different part compared to the one used in serial production.

Toyota blamed these lapses on on-site and managerial oversights.

The problems included unclear internal operational rules for preparing documents required for certification application and insufficient awareness of the importance of certification work.

Toyota also said management lacked full understanding of and involvement in certification.

The scandal also triggered an investor backlash against Chairman Akio Toyoda at the annual shareholders’ meeting in June, when the longtime company leader saw his support rate fall to a record low.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s forced production suspension following the misconduct contributed to a 13 percent slide in global output in June.

  4. These certification errors are because of stringent Japanese regulations vs regulations overseas. Some of the vehicles tested by Toyota were under regulations that are stricter compared to Japanese MLIT regulations.

One Japan-based Bloomberg writer has explained this issue - https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2024-06-05/toyota-safety-scandal-shouldn-t-shame-japanese-automakers

Why Toyota's 'Safety Scandal' Is a Nothingburger

The matter that’s embroiled Toyota and other automakers is a tempest in a teapot. Reform the regulators instead.

    1. Only fanboys would think that Toyota's safety cheating issue isn't a big deal or a non-issue
Toyota is guilty of cheating at various crash tests that's why the DNGA vehicles were recalled or suspended its production as Toyota admits its faults.
Toyota still won't send units of DNGA Yaris Cross for crash tests purposes at ASEAN NCAP as it'll expose the 3 star ASEAN NCAP crash test result of the DNGA Yaris Cross

  8. It is really getting worse for haters of Toyota. Despite of all the negative news about the brand, Toyota is increasing their sales. In fact in the news Toyota wants to sell less vehicles because it it selling so much. Meanwhile in other news, a Chinese car brands closes shop or changes distributor again. Haters just cannot get it why majority buy Toyota.

    2. Sales of Toyota are down in Japan as the sales of the Raize was heavily affected by the crash test cheating scandal

Toyota fanatics like you are similar to Ford fanatics who always brag about sales numbers even if the brands that you worship a lot are full of recalls, cheating scandals, build quality issues, etc
