After making its debut in the United States, the ninth-generation Camry has finally made its way to ASEAN. Of all places, Toyota decided to go with Singapore as the Camry’s debut market for the region where the executive sedan gains an electrified powertrain.
Like the U.S. market, the all-new Camry drops its conventional gasoline engine (including the V6), in favor of Toyota’s fifth-generation 2.5-liter Toyota Hybrid System. This self-charging hybrid system provides a combined total of 227 horsepower—185 horsepower of which is courtesy of the Atkinson cycle 2.5-liter engine. Fuel efficiency remains top notch with the carmaker quoting an impressive 19.6 km/L.
Compared to the previous Toyota Hybrid System, this fifth-gen system has a more compact transaxle with smaller and lighter components and a more powerful electric motor with double the number of magnets inside the rotor. It also gets a new lithium-ion battery to replace the current nickel-metal hydride battery, providing a more compact size, lighter weight, and increased output.
Riding on a carryover platform (TNGA-K), Toyota engineers have retuned the suspension for improved responsiveness and handling.
Designed at Toyota’s CALTY studios, the 2025 Camry features the distinctive hammerhead front fascia seen in the likes of the all-new Prius and bZ4X. The C-shaped headlights and diamond mesh pattern in the grille complete its aggressive makeover. The same hammerhead design is continued at the rear with a sleek taillight signature and condensed rear end that provides a sharp and aerodynamic profile. It rides on 18-inch wheels and tires.
Inside the cabin, the new Camry features a revised interior design that integrates the center display into the dashboard, flowing into horizontal slats that seamlessly transition to the passenger air vents. The seats have been redesigned for 2025 for improved support and comfort.
In terms of technology, the Singaporean market Camry has all digital gauges (12.3-inch in size) paired with an 8-inch touchscreen center display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also standard is a wireless charger as is a combination of USB Type A and Type C ports. In terms of convenience, it comes with dual zone climate control with rear vents, a push-start system, automatic rain-sensing wipers, a moonroof, power adjustment front and rear (with a rear seat armrest control), and more.
Like the Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard issue in the 2025 Camry. This suite includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, and even proactive driving assist.
With Singapore already receiving the all-new Camry, it’s just going to be a matter of time when the Philippines will get it as well. And because the excise tax exemption now covers hybrids, it’s very likely that sourcing for the 2025 Camry will move to Japan like the RAV4 and Alphard.
An appearance at the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) in October is highly likely. Though Toyota Motor Philippines hasn’t confirmed what they will show, they did mention that they’ll be showcasing one “environmentally-friendly vehicle.”
Made in Japan, one would hope to get tariff benefits. If Thailand, I hope Toyota passes on the reduced development costs by keeping price close to current model.
ReplyDeleteI hope Toyota PH brings in a variant with sport suspension (XSE in the US).
ReplyDeleteI don't think Toyota Ph would bring that given the Camry just sells very few units locally.
DeletePhilippines is now a SUV country. Sedans are a dying breed.
