Mazda Now Holds Guinness World Record For Longest Running One-Make Race Series

Mazda has received a Guinness World Record for the longest running one-make automobile racing series. With the 35th running of the 4-hour Mazda Media Roadster 4-Hour Endurance Race last September 21, the record was made official at the Tsukuba Circuit in Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan.

More commonly known in the Japanese press circles as the “Mazda Media 4-Hour Endurance Race,” the one-make racing series started in 1989 coinciding with the launch of the first-generation MX-5 (Roadster in Japan). The aim, according to Mazda, is to have the members of the press who normally report on motorsports experience the fun and appeal of racing itself.

After the race last September 21, 2024, a certification ceremony was held in which Guinness World Records official adjudicator Fumika Fujibuchi presented the certificate to the event’s executive committee chairman, Toshiharu Suzuki.

At the certification ceremony, Toshiharu Suzuki said, “The Roadster, which was born in 1989, revived the lightweight sports car genre and has since made an unbroken history for 35 years, establishing a solid position in the world. The Media 4-Hour Endurance race has run parallel to that history, with a total of 820 Roadsters battling it out in heated battles. I am extremely pleased that this world-class race has been recognized by the Guinness World Records. I would like to celebrate with everyone who has been involved, and let’s continue to break the record.”

Mazda's President and CEO Masahiro Moro, who participated in this event as a driver, said after the event, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone in the media, everyone who supports the race management, and all the fans who support us, for allowing us to continue this world-class race for 35 years. Mazda will continue to create experiences that make people feel that cars are fun, and deliver happiness that can be shared with their friends.”
