Just how many “stars” are the side-impact airbags worth in the Toyota Raize? Four, apparently, as it scored a disappointing one-star rating at its Global New Car Assessment Program or NCAP safety test.
Produced also in Indonesia, but for the Latin American market, the model tested only had two airbags and Electronic Stability Control or ESC as standard. This mirrors the 1.2 E and 1.2 G spec for the Philippine market.
During its Global NCAP test, it achieved 40.54 percent in Adult Occupant, 71.57 percent in Child Occupant, 58.7 percent in Pedestrian Protection and Vulnerable Road Users and 58.14 percent in Safety Assist.
The Raize was tested in all aspects—frontal, side impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection, and ESC. The frontal impact showed unstable structure and marginal protection to driver chest. Side impact showed marginal protection to the chest and a relevant intrusion in the passenger compartment, increasing the risks of injuries to its occupants. As side head protection is not standard, side pole impact was rated with zero points and penalized for the lack of head protection in front and second rows.
The model tested also doesn’t offer any sort of ADAS mirroring the Philippine market spec.
“It is disappointing that Toyota once again engages in selling low-safety cars for certain countries in the region, such as the Raize. We know that the brand can achieve better performances in vehicle safety, so we strongly call for the company to reconsider its safety equipment strategy and subject its models to safety evaluations so that consumers know their real performance,” commented Stephan Brodziak, Latin NCAP Chairman.
It must be noted that the Raize as the Perodua Ativa scored a perfect 5-star rating when equipped with ADAS during its ASEAN NCAP test. Even without ADAS, like the Philippine-spec 1.0 Turbo, its rating drops by just one-star to a 4-star ASEAN NCAP rating.
Another hard pill to swallow for toyota fans.

Thats why im disappointed with creta as even the top of the line has only 2 airbags here in ph. Seltos mid and base also has 2 airbags, xforce and hrv base 4 airbags, territory and yaris cross all variants has 6 airbags. The safest is corolla cross, all variants has 9 airbags.
ReplyDeleteFor Most ph first time car buyers price is the key. Mirage, vios, suzuki(all models has only 2 airbags) selling well. Just go for raize turbo with 6 airbags for safer ride.

DeleteNCAP is not about reliability. It is about the safety features, and having 2 airbags and lack of ADAS cost stars.
DeleteToyota needs to work with its re-badging partners like Daihatsu and Suzuki to ensure its reputation as a quality and safe car manufacturer does not change. Many of their competitors have outsourced design and factory to fellow car makers so nothing new or bad here. This is how to maintain profit margins for entry cars. Reputation is one of Toyota's selling points why it is number one locally. Hope this does not ruin its reputation.

DeleteJaps vs Chinese cars.? Not only me but majority of the world population would choose jap sales figures would show. Even pogo owners, chinoys, goons in the golden triangle and triads in Macau prefer japs. To be fair Chinese cars are so technically advanced but there is more to that in a car purchase. Maybe in a few years Chinese will increase their share in the phil form 5% to 7%

The Raize variants selling well here are the non-turbo variants, maybe this will make Raize buyers opt for the turbo variant instead.
DeleteThe test conducted was under Latin NCAP, not Global NCAP and the unit tested is what is available in the market. Carguide PH also posted a news last January 24, 2022 about ASEAN NCAP testing of Raize/Perodua Ativa which scored a five star rating.

Being a safe car doesn’t necessarily equate a reliable car (e.g., Subaru) while a reliable car doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a safe car (e.g., vios)

Toyota,Suzuki and Honda aren't particular anymore with the overall safety of its customers and car buyers.
Chinese vehicles are way much safer now due to very strict crash test protocols and standards of CNCAP and very high standards of car buyers in China.
I think you may have confused reliability and safety. For the same price, Toyota will be more reliable. But the Chinese offerings are way safer in terms of passenger protection.
DeleteIf you want safety, buy a vehicle that is worth around 2 to 3 million (php) or higher. Remember, even if you're driving a Ferrari you can still die or loose a limb or two.
ReplyDeleteRaize or Rocky whatever you wanna call it is a budget car, do not expect a 5 star rating, especially in the base models. When i bought the mid variant, i know what to expect from it and i don't regret whatever the rating it got. I don't like Chinese cars for the reason that critical parts are so scarce. You need to wait 2 to 4 months for a fuel pump. For me that is the biggest deal breaker.

Pricy china made Sonet even the top of the line has only 2 airbags, middle and base variant has no stability control and hill start assist. Stability control and hill start assist are standard on all raize variant, the turbo has 6 airbags. Raize miles better than china made sonet. Based on what i am seeing on the road, sales ratio could be 500:1
