Lexus Introduces LX With Hybrid Engine For 2025


Lexus has introduced an enhanced version of its flagship SUV, the LX for 2025, bringing with it an important feature it missed on during its launch: a hybrid powertrain.

Featured on the Lexus LX 700h, it keeps the same 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and 10-speed automatic combo. However, it now gets a parallel hybrid system that integrates a Motor Generator (MG) with a clutch positioned between the engine and gearbox. No word on its combined power, but looking at its application elsewhere in the Toyota/Lexus line-up, it could make more than 440 horsepower and 790 Nm of torque.

Also, unlike other Lexus hybrids, the Lexus LX 700h is first model to have both an alternator and starter. In the event of a hybrid system failure, the starter enables independent engine ignition, while the alternator powers the 12-volt auxiliary battery. This allows it to continue driving using only the engine. Even in this emergency driving mode, essential features such as the transfer case’s low range, ride height adjustment, active height control, and active traction control all remain fully operational.



With the hybrid battery encased in a waterproof structure located in the rear floor, it ensures that the Lexus LX 700h has impressive water fording capability—up to 700 mm—which makes it the same as the conventional LX. In the unlikely event that water does enter the tray, a water sensor positioned inside will detect it and alert the driver through a meter display.

Equipped with a waterproof AC inverter positioned under the center console, the LX 700h can also provide external power of up to 1,500 watts or 2,400 watts depending on the region. Power outlets have been installed at the rear of the center console and in the cargo hold.

To accommodate the added weight and extended length of the powertrain, the LX’s GA-F platform has been modified with an additional cross member. Additionally, the material used for the rear engine mount has been upgraded to a more durable option to support the increased powertrain weight.

Furthermore, a new spare tire cross has been designed to reposition the spare tire to facilitate the installation of the hybrid main battery in the rear floor. This adjustment optimizes the mounting angle, lowering the installation position while maintaining the departure angle, thereby balancing off-road capability with serviceability.



The 12V battery has been relocated from the engine compartment to the side of the cargo compartment. A dedicated metal tray and detachable battery brace have been added to enhance ease of replacement while improving body rigidity around the rear quarter area.

Other changes applicable not just to the LX 700h, but to the LX 600 as well include improved rigidity via radiator support modifications, instrument panel reinforcements, newly-designed cab mount cushions, and tweaks to the Adaptive Variable Suspension or AVS.

More visible changes to the 2025 Lexus LX include a 12.3-inch full LCD gauge cluster, “refresh” front seats with built-in massagers, and a wireless charging pad.

Finally, the Lexus LX gets an available Overtrail trim which supports a more outdoorsy or adventure lifestyle. The unique aesthetics with its black spindle grille and matte gray wheels are complemented by standard front and rear diff locks and all-terrain 265/70R18 tires (the standard LX comes with either 265/55R20 or 265/55R22 wheels).



The updated Lexus LX goes on sale first in Japan with a gradual global rollout planned starting late 2024.
