PIMS: Honda Cars Surprises With MUGEN Civic Type R Group A Philippine Debut

If you find the Honda Civic Type R still a bit too pedestrian for your tastes, how’s this for a surprise. Honda Cars Philippines is bringing in just five of these ultra-special Mugen Civic Type R Group. This becomes the most exclusive variant of the Civic Type R in the country.

Premiering at the Tokyo Auto Salon last January, the Mugen Civic Type R Group A is based on one simple thing: “extreme.” Using know-how accumulated through motorsports, the Mugen Civic Type R Group A is designed to further improve the Civic Type R’s aero performance with these five aero parts.

Through repeated CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and wind tunnel tests, the Mugen Civic Type R Group A produces 25 percent more downforce compared to the OE package.

The styling is all about “functional beauty.” At the front is a new front under spoiler that contributes to the downforce gain and solidifies the presence of the Civic Type R. In addition, the front bumper garnish is installed at the front air skirt to fully express Mugen’s racing spirit.

Following the same design, the side garnish and rear under spoiler are also finished in gloss black to further emphasize the Civic Type R’s low and wide stance.

Meanwhile, the rear wing is larger than the OE Civic Type R’s and features a twist towards the outward part of the end plate. This shape has been optimized not just through CFD and wind tunnel tests, but actual track tests as well. The use of a dry carbon end plate equals weight loss as well.

At each corner, the Mugen Civic Type R Group A sports new performance dampers courtesy of Yamaha. This improves the ride quality and steering stability over the stock Civic Type R. In addition, it also sports exclusive forged alloy wheels. Co-developed with BBS, these “FR10” diamond black wheels weigh 10 kilograms lighter than the stock wheels. The lug nuts themselves have been changed over to high-strength SCM435 (chrome molybdenum steel) with a tube design. Capping off the changes is a single exit sports exhaust system. Inside, the changes is limited to an Alcantara shift knob (to match the stock Alcantara steering wheel).

Given the limited availability of the Mugen Civic Type R Group A, Honda Cars Philippines is not disclosing any pricing.
