Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) rolled off the Philippine-made next-generation Tamaraw commercial vehicle at its manufacturing plant and headquarters in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
With a returning nameplate, the Tamaraw is based on Toyota’s new International Multi-purpose Vehicle 0 (IMV 0) platform designed for the Asian market. Such move to localize this model underscores the company’s support to the Philippine government in strengthening the economy, revitalizing local automotive manufacturing, and adding new value by reaching new sectors.
TMP has invested P 5.5-billion to localize the assembly of the IMV 0 platform. It has also bumped up the capacity of the Santa Rosa, Laguna plant to over 54,800 units annually; 22,000 of which will be the next-generation Tamaraw. The Innova and Vios will remain locally assembled in Laguna.
The investment includes a new state-of-the-art P 1.1-billion “TMP Conversion Factory.” This will enable Toyota Motor Philippines to produce state-of-the-art body styles for the Tamaraw including drop side pickup, aluminum van, and utility van (FX) at high quality and low cost.
Additionally, TMP sees this production expansion as a bolster to local capabilities and regional competitiveness. It will also drive technology transfer and sustain employment for Filipinos.
With the Tamaraw’s robust and versatile design targeted for commercial use, TMP will provide inclusive mobility solutions for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across various industries in the country.
“It is the third locally produced model here in our Santa Rosa Plant – built by Filipinos, for Filipinos! It is a testament to our commitment to nation building, our belief in Filipino craftsmanship, and our continuing mission to create ever-better cars for the Philippines,” said TMP Chairman Alfred V. Ty in his welcome address.
Toyota Asia Region deputy chief executive officer Hao Quoc Tien noted that the TMP Conversion Factory is a capability breakthrough, being first of its kind in the Southeast Asian region.
For its upstream economic impact, the local production of the Next Generation Tamaraw also boosts TMP’s supply chain. Toyota suppliers—including new parts-makers and returning previous-generation Tamaraw body builders—have drawn investment plans amounting to P 500 million, covering plant set-up, expansion, and procurement of equipment.
The next-generation Tamaraw will be launched this December 6, 2024 with customer deliveries starting by January 2025 with a retail price starting at below P 800,000. Check out the full specs.
