Waze, Google Maps Get AI Integration

Alphabet, Inc. has announced updates to its two navigation apps, Waze and Google Maps. These new features will gradually be rolled out globally and includes integration with Gemini—Google’s very own AI.

With Gemini integration, Google Maps users will be able to create activities or itineraries. Say a friend is visiting and you need to plan an activity. You can just ask Google Maps for “things to do with friends at night” to get ideas curated by Gemini. You can find out more about a place, including reviews summarized by the AI as well.

When it comes to driving, Google Maps will now add the ability to “add stops.” In addition, there’s enhanced navigation that shows lanes, crosswalks, and road signs more clearly on the map. There’s even no need to merge at the last minute even when driving through unfamiliar roads; you simply have to follow the blue line on the map.

As you reach your destination, Google Maps will also offer information such as nearby parking lots and even switch over to Street View or AR walking navigation to get you to your destination as quickly and as safely as possible.

Over to Waze, a new Conversational Reporting feature will enable users to report a range of incidents—traffic, potholes, construction—by just tapping a button. Say you're cruising down the highway and spot a sudden slowdown. All you need to do is tap the reporting button and speak naturally, “Looks like there are cars jammed up ahead!” With the help of Gemini capabilities, Waze will understand what you’re saying and quickly add a real-time report to the map for you — no need to use a specific voice command or tap extra buttons. Waze will even ask you a follow-up question when it needs more information or details.

Finally, to help keep students, pedestrians, and drivers safer when they're near these busy areas, Waze is adding school zones to its map. This means that when you’re driving near a school when it’s open, you’ll receive an alert that reminds you to be extra cautious.
