The Ford Mustang GTD Is The Fastest American Car Around The Nürburgring Nordschleife

The Ford Mustang is now the fastest car from an American brand to lap the 20.83-kilometer Nürburgring Nordschleife. The 2025 Mustang GTD did the feat in just 6 minutes 57.685 seconds.

Driven by Dirk Müller, the 815-horsepower Mustang GTD lapped the circuit nicknamed, “The Green Hell.”. The Mustang GTD’s time is the fifth fastest time by a stock production sports car according to the Nürburgring’s official records, and Mustang GTD is only the sixth vehicle in that class to break the seven-minute barrier.

The time delivers on the goal laid out by CEO Jim Farley at the Mustang GTD’s debut in August 2023.

The Mustang GTD is no ordinary Mustang. A small team of engineers and designers worked for two years and essentially took a Mustang GT3 race car and turned it into the “first-ever Mustang supercar.”

It represents the apex of Mustang performance and benefits from lessons learned by Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports—the company that runs the Mustang GT3 program. Because it isn’t subject to the rules and regulations of GT3 racing, engineers could push the limits more in areas such as aerodynamics that allowed for the sub-seven-minute lap time.

The Mustang GTD features a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with dry sump lubrication mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic. It features a near 50-50 weight distribution, semi-active suspension, active aerodynamics, and carbon ceramic brakes. The body is made from formed carbon fiber panels. For its record-setting lap of the Nürburgring, it was installed with a mandated roll cage and five-point safety harness.
