The Mitsubishi Triton Is Japan's Best Designed Car For 2024-2025

The Mitsubishi Triton has been awarded with the Design Car of the Year award at the 2024-2025 Japan Car of the Year awards. This marks the second consecutive year that Mitsubishi has won the award following last year’s win for the Delica Mini.

Per the Japan Car of the Year jurors, “Following last year, Mitsubishi has won the Design Car of the Year award yet again. Whereas last time it was the Delica Mini, the award went to the Triton, a pickup truck, which is a global strategic vehicle. The award was given to Mitsubishi’s specialty, a four-wheel drive. It appears rugged at first glance, but nonetheless evokes a new lifestyle. The robust form is harmonized with the bold front-end design that the company calls ‘Dynamic Shield.’ Despite the complex double cab design, the company has achieved well-balanced proportions.”

The Triton’s Beat Mode design gives this pickup truck a powerful and strong design, yet expresses a presence that’s also dignified. In addition to the toughness required of a pickup truck, the Triton features the brand’s Dynamic Shield front design concept that expresses safety and security. Here, it’s been optimized for the pickup truck with its strong, three-dimensional front grille and a shape that seamlessly connects to the fenders.

Inside, the instrument panel features the evolution of Mitsubishi’s “Horizontal Axis” design. This design, which emphasizes horizontal themes, makes everything easy to control. The main focus is visibility with the dials and switches all offering the right amount of tactile feedback that can be operated easily even when wearing gloves. Soft pads are used in strategic areas to add comfort, while geometric shapes and metallic colors create a high-contrast, modern space.

Developed under the product concept of, “Power for Adventure,” the all-new Triton features an extensively revamped running gear and platform. Sales begun in Thailand where it’s assembled in 2023. Since then, it’s been exported to around 100 countries around the world. The Triton was introduced in its home market of Japan in early 2024.

This is the third major design award won by the Triton. Previously, it was awarded with the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award.

  2. This is called gentlemens agreement amongst japanese car makers. They build each other up. The last time they did this was when mitsu declared bankruptcy. They all agreed to help and rebuild the mitsu brand again.
Soon they will do the same thing to nissan who is now in the verge of closing down shop.

    1. Hard to sell the Triton in Japan as it doesn't fit at smaller roads and residential parking lots in Japan aside from the pickup truck is heavily taxed there.

  3. The individual details look fine if you zoom into them but as a whole, the design is an utter mess! They better find a way to make the Montero Sport look better because the Triton is definitely polarizing, even after many months since its launch.

  5. Mitsubishi deserve that award
Toyota fanatics are mad that the generic Chinese SUV looking Lexus LBX and trying hard to be retro Land Cruiser Prado didn't win that award
Exterior design of the Mitsubishi Triton looks blocky as it tries to imitate the exterior design of American pickup trucks like the Ford F150,Chevrolet Silverado,GMC and RAM pickup trucks.
