Toyota Alphard Gains Plug-In Hybrid Version For 2025

Toyota expands its Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) offering to include the Alphard luxury MPV. Launched in Japan, it coincides with minor changes to the standard HEV variant as well.

The Alphard PHEV offers an electric driving range of 73 kilometers and can be charged in just 38 minutes. Despite the switch to a large capacity 15.26-kWh lithium-ion battery, it’s mounted under the floor at the center of the MPV helping it maintain its cabin space. Moreover, it can supply power to small appliances thanks to a 1,500-watt external power supply.

The combustion engine duties is handled by a 2.5-liter engine (A25A-FXS) with 177 horsepower and 219 Nm of torque. When combined with the pair electric motors, a 182 horsepower one upfront and a 54 horsepower at the back (it has the E-Four all-wheel drive system), it makes a total of 306 horsepower. Although the Alphard PHEV can switch from BEV to HEV mode on its own, when HEV mode is engaged, it’ll still make 16.7 km/L—slightly lower than the Alphard HEV but still good for 785 kilometers of range.

The larger battery results in a lower center of gravity (minus 35 mm) and as a result, Toyota had to optimize the body frame and suspension. It also has Smooth Stop, a control system that suppresses sudden nosedives when decelerating to help stabilize passenger seating positions. And because it can run on electric power on short trips, engineers had to pay close attention to improving NVH. This is done by increasing the sound deadening material to the instrument panel, doors, and even the body frame.

Differentiating the Alphard PHEV from its HEV sibling, it receives exclusive 19-inch wheels in a silver sputtering finish. Inside, it features woodgrain on the steering wheel and the ceiling is now covered in Ultrasuede.

Meanwhile, the Alphard HEV adds the option of a 15-speaker JBL sound system and a 14-inch rear entertainment system for enhanced levels of comfort and luxury. A digital review mirror is now standard too.

The refreshed 2025 Alphard HEV and Alphard PHEV goes on sale now in Japan with customer deliveries to commence by January 2025. No word if its availability will be expanded to other markets.
