Honda’s humanoid walking robot, Asimo, is making a comeback; only this time, it’ll become the carmaker’s new vehicle operating system (OS) on Honda 0 Series cars.
As a software platform, Asimo OS will basically be the “brains” of the car. It will apply integrated control of electronic control units (ECUs) for vehicle systems such as automated driving/advanced driver assistance systems (AD/ADAS), integrated control dynamics, and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system.
Asimo OS will use the myriad of sensors and built-in artificial intelligence to deliver hands- and eventually eyes-off driving. In addition, Honda says the AD/ADAS will be “ultra-personalized” in that the degree of acceleration/deceleration, steering speed, and other driving behaviors can vary depending on driver preference. It will also learn the driver’s tendencies as well.
Together with the more advanced AD/ADAS, integrated control dynamics will mean Honda 0 models will have its various systems such as steering, braking, throttle, and even ride all controlled by computer. Using advanced 3D gyro sensors, it will improve overall vehicle posture and stabilization. It will also enable precise torque distribution in the Honda 0 series’s multi-electric motor drive system.
And compared to current Honda in-vehicle software, Asimo OS will be updatable over the air so that functions and services will be continuously improved in accordance with preferences and needs. These include the user interface and even the tweaking of the various drive systems.
The Asimo OS’s centralized architecture will run off a single high-performance ECU with a chipset designed by Renasas. The setup will target 2,000 trillion operations per second (2,000 TOPS).
Honda will be installing the Asimo OS in all Honda 0 Series models, including production models of the Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon.
