Could we be seeing the end of artificially bumped up fuel economy figures and hypermiling by different car brands? The Philippines will now be implementing a standardized fuel economy labeling system.
Posted by ABS-CBN News on their Facebook page, the Department of Energy (DOE) will roll out its Vehicle Fuel Economy Labeling Program System. Comprised of two parts: the Fuel Economy Label (FEL) and the Fuel Economy Sticker (FES), they will be implemented starting the first 2025. It will be a requirement on all new cars sold in the country.
The move will also require all manufacturers, importers, distributors, dealers, and re-builders to register their vehicles with the DOE. The registration is valid for three years, while registration for each specific vehicle model and/or type is valid for six years.
The FEL will have the vehicle’s urban/highway fuel economy (in km/L) boldly displayed. Though the figure will be based on each manufacturer’s declaration, these figures must be tested with established international standards. The DOE has yet to say what this established standard is, but it’ll likely the widely-accepted WLTP. The FES, meanwhile, will contain a QR code linked to detailed vehicle information and its fuel economy performance rating.
Aside from the km/L figure, the label will also display its combined CO2 emission figure (g/km).
Other pertinent information to be displayed include the initial production year, vehicle make and model, vehicle type, and fuel type.

ReplyDeleteStep in the right direction but hopefully they use real world testing and not based on manufacturer data. Test the vehicle rush hour EDSA and test it weekend going to Clark. Combine numbers then you get highway and city FE.
