The Ford Mustang may have been America’s best-selling sportscar last year, but remarkably, it was outsold—for the first time—by its electric cousin, the Mustang Mach-E.
Figures shared by Ford reveal that the Mustang Mach-E managed to outsell its gasoline-powered, two-door counterpart by nearly 8,000 units in the United States. The OG Mustang sold 44,003 units—down 9.5 percent and its lowest level in 20 years. Meanwhile, Mach-E sales rose 27 percent to 51,745 units.
Ford says that sales of the gas-powered Mustang were hampered by production issues that led to tight supplies. However, the carmaker remains optimistic about it.
Generally, sports cars sales have shrunk in the United States. Mazda sold fewer MX-5s in 2024 compared to 2023 (8,103 versus 8,973), while the Mustang’s two direct rivals from Chevrolet and Dodge abandoned the segment altogether. Nissan, however, managed to sell more Zs (3,164 versus 1,771), while Toyota and its GR 86 is up slightly to 11,426 from 11,078 in 2023.
Despite lower sales, Ford says that the Mustang’s share of its segment rose about 10 percent versus 2023.
Meanwhile, the Mach-E’s sales helped Ford sell 97,865 EVs in the United States (up 35 percent). The growth in Mach-E sales is attributed to the launch of the Rally off-road variant as well as incentives including the installation of a free home charger.
