The Triton may be the centerpiece of Mitsubishi Motors’ display at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but its design and customization team isn’t stopping there. Joining it at the 8-car booth is the Outlander PHEV Night Seeker Concept.
Starting with an Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi designers took inspiration from the hit video game series, Metal Gear Solid. The compact SUV gains all-terrain tires while the body itself is wrapped in a black camouflage pattern. The chrome trim, including the one on the three-diamond logo and Dynamic Shield, has been covered up, while decals that look straight from the video game’s interface pepper the exterior.
The Outlander PHEV Night Seeker Concept also comes with extended fenders and a unique transparent front “mask” that’s there to protect the headlights from getting peltered with rocks or stones while on the trail. Cubic trail lights, a roof box with a built-in light bar (supported by tension cables no less), and the Force Operation X (FOX) logo on the C-pillar complete the transformation.
It’s unlikely that this particular Outlander will ever reach production, but here’s hoping that Mitsubishi starts tapping into Japanese pop-culture for some zany special editions. Xforce Mario Brothers Edition, anyone?
This is how Japanese pride looks like.
