BYD is expanding the Atto SUV family with the introduction of the Atto 2. Known as the Yuan Up in China and Yuan Pro elsewhere, the Atto 2 is a budget-conscious, all-electric, sub-compact SUV that’s big on tech.
Running on the same platform as the Dolphin, and by extension, the Atto 3, the Atto 2 measures in at 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height. It’s roughly the same size as the Honda HR-V and Toyota Yaris Cross.
Like other vehicles underpinned by BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Atto 2 utilizes a Cell-to-Body (CTB) construction. What this means is that the lithium-iron phosphate battery is completely integrated into the vehicle chassis helping it deliver exceptional levels of rigidity, while also minimizing any intrusions to the cabin (the battery’s top cover is the floor of the passenger compartment).
For Europe, it comes with two battery sizes with the “standard edition” having a 45.1-kWh battery enough for 312 kilometers of range. The front-mounted motor produces a stonking 176 horsepower (130 kW) and 290 Nm in this case. A larger battery option will be made available later. Meanwhile, in China, the Atto 2 is also available with a smaller 32-kWh battery. This version produces 95 horsepower (70 kW) and 180 Nm of torque.
The Atto 2 takes on a look also seen in the Atto 3 SUV. It has full LED headlights and slim DRLs giving it a strong visual presence. Differentiating it from the Atto 3 though, the Atto 2 does have much more cladding at the side. This is on purpose, BYD says, as it accentuates its agile looks and emphasizes its height. It also has a floating roofline that’s punctuated by a body-colored element at the C-pillar.
Like the rest of the BYD line-up, the Atto 2 puts tech front and center to the cabin experience. It makes do without the quirky cabin treatment seen in the Dolphin and Atto 3 for something remarkably sane this time. The driver gets a large all screen display, while the trademark rotating infotainment screen’s present at the center. The drive selector has a cut-diamond look and thankfully, BYD has managed to incorporate hard key for several vehicle functions surrounding it. It also has a panoramic sunroof too. And thanks to its 2,620 mm wheelbase, it offers exceptional space front or back; while the cargo hold can swallow 400 liters which can be further expanded to 1,340 liters.
The BYD Atto 2 is already being sold in China (as the Yuan Up), while other regions like South America have started selling them just last September. Europe will get the Atto 2 starting this February. The rest of the world, likely including the Philippines, will follow within this year.
Pure EV vs HEV, different market, though sometime overlapped. Most buyers of pure EV already have ICE or HEV. EV good as 2nd, 3rd car, but not practical if a buyer could only afford 1 car.
