The Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 12R Features A Motorsports-Tuned 200-Horsepower Engine

The Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 has finally made it from concept to production with good amounts of both show and go. The major highlight of Mazda’s booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2025, it marks the return of in-house tuned Mazda vehicles courtesy of the new Mazda Spirit Racing division.

At the Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda Spirit Racing showed off two new MX-5 variants—the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R and the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster. While the 12R is a limited run variant, both models carry motorsports technology and know-how developed by Mazda Spirit while racing in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series.

Limited to just 200 units worldwide, the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R features a hand-assembled 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder engine. Although the stock MX-5 isn’t lacking in power, the 12R makes an even 200 horsepower—up 16 horsepower from before. This is thanks to a special camshaft, piston head, manifold, and a Fujitsubo exhaust. This is mated to a 6-speed manual.

Additional power aside, the 12R comes standard with Bilstein shocks, lightweight Forged Rays alloy wheels with Advan Neova AD09 tires, and Brembo brakes. Inside, it has Alcantara-covered Recaro sports seats which happen to match the swathes of the same grippy material found on the steering wheel, dashboard, and shifter. Everything is capped off by new red seatbelts.

Price? According to Mazda, the 12R will be sold at around 7 million yen.

For those who can’t get their hands on the 12R, there’s also the mass-production Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster. Customer deliveries for this model will commence around mid-2025 (this tells us that the all-new MX-5 won’t be appearing any time soon). This variant comes with all the goodies in the 12R minus the power bump, Fujitsubo exhaust, and Recaro seats.

The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster will cost around 5 million yen says Mazda.
