Honda’s new family of dedicated battery electric vehicles is inching closer to production with the unveil of two Honda 0 (Zero) Series prototypes: the Honda 0 Saloon and Honda 0 SUV. These two vehicles will be introduced gradually to global markets starting in 2026.
Both Honda 0 models stay true to the concept models introduced last year and will be underpinned by a new EV architecture. The overlying development theme for these models is, “Thin, Light, and Wise.”
The platform will not only use ultra-high strength steel in its construction, but it will be manufactured using the mega casting method that simplifies the number of parts from more than 60 to just five. Honda aims to also expand the use of aluminum in this new platform too.
Some targets of the Honda 0 include a 40 percent downsized electric motor (Honda e-Axle), a six percent thinner battery pack (483-kilometer range with less than 10 percent battery degradation after 10 years), and 100 kilograms lighter than current EV models.
The Honda 0 Saloon maintains its low-slung, wedgy styling keeping it distinct from other EVs thus far. Meanwhile, the interior is more spacious than its exterior dimensions suggest.
On the other hand, the Honda 0 SUV is built around the concept of EVs being “space” for people. Compared to its concept version, engineers were able to free up even more interior room, while also expanding the cabin for a remarkably airy and unrestricted feel.
Both models have a straightforward interior that’s minimalist in design. It will have expansive screens and almost no buttons. And if these Honda models stay true when it comes to production, it will also have a steering wheel yoke.
Honda is banking on “ultra-personal optimization” for the Honda 0 models. Both the Honda 0 Saloon and Honda 0 SUVs will offer integrated vehicle dynamics with by-wire steering, steering, braking and acceleration with four-wheel torque vectoring. This is made possible by advanced 3D gyro sensors to make the vehicle operate as intended over any terrain and a multi-core ECU that unifies control over all vehicle systems include drive motor torque distribution. All in all, Honda says it will attain Level 3 autonomous driving.
The Honda 0 Series models will also introduce a new automotive OS dubbed Asimo OS.
So this is why Honda does not make diesel engines, to be honest.
