Geely Motor Philippines is now in business. Switching from a distributor to subsidiary arrangement, the carmaker has formally introduced its new product offerings, representing its present and its future. Apart from the updated Coolray (which they announced in October) and Emgrand, Geely showed off the EX5 full-electric compact SUV.
Engineered to compete directly with the likes of the BYD Atto 3, the EX5 marks the overseas debut of the GEA platform, Geely’s new global intelligent new energy architecture. With dimensions set at 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width, 1,670 mm in height (2,750 mm wheelbase), it’s sized squarely in the compact SUV space. However, thanks to a class-leading 67.2 percent space utilization rate, it has interior space a class higher.
For example, these are the numbers that Geely shared on the EX5 (versus the Atto 3):
- Rear Headroom: 1,001 mm (978 mm)
- Rear Legroom: 1,005 mm (892 mm)
- Rear Seat Cushion Length: 505 mm (515 mm)
- Rear Seat Cushion Width: 1,345 mm (1,330 mm)
- Rear Seat Back Adjustment: 30/35 degrees (25 degrees)
The EX5’s exterior design emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency with its blanked-out grille and flush door handles. All in all, it has a co-efficient of drag at 0.269—significantly lower than the competition. Aesthetically, it features sophisticated LED head- and taillights and 235/50 R 19 tires.
The GEA platform supports various powertrain layouts be it battery electric, range extended electric, and plug-in hybrid, but for the EX5, it uses Geely’s “11-in-1” electric drive. This ultra-compact motor system weighs in at just 79.8 kilograms and puts out 217 horsepower (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque driving the front wheels. 0 to 100 km/h, Geely says, is done in just 6.9 seconds.
Meanwhile, power is supplied by the Geely Short Blade Battery. Compared to other lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, Geely says it offers 6.7 percent higher battery density and up to 52 percent better charging rate. For example, when using a CCS Type 2 DC fast charger, 10 minutes of charge returns 135 kilometers of range (versus 110 kilometers in the Atto 3). It can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes—10 minutes faster than the Atto 3. With a 60.22-kW size, it can go up to 430 kilometers between charges. It’s also much safer too, passing Geely’s “six extreme tests” with all battery parameters remaining normal.
The EX5 also marks the global debut of the GEEA 3.0—Geely’s latest electrical and electronics architecture. This allows it to receive the brand’s first complete advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) aligned with Level 2+ self-driving. This means adaptive cruise control with stop & go support, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot indicators with rear cross traffic alert are standard issue. Moreover, it powers the Flyme Auto infotainment system which integrates various vehicle functions within its 15.4-inch center touchscreen, including Apple CarPlay. The high-performance chipset also offers faster responses and a clearer visuals.
Inside, the EX5 offers a minimalist cabin design with flexible seating options. This includes the front passenger seat being completely reclinable to meet the rear bench creating a makeshift bed. And thanks to its purpose-built EV platform, it has a flat rear floor which happens to integrate a 14-liter storage box nestled at the base of the seats. Open the tailgate, and it can accommodate items up to 1.1 meters in width. Total cargo capacity is rated at 1,887 liters with the rear seats down. With the rear seats up, it’s still a commendable 302 liters with a 108-liter + 51-liter underfloor storage.
Other equipment includes ventilation and massagers built into the power front seats (with memory for the driver), a 14-speaker Flyme Sound premium audio system with speakers also built into the driver’s headrest, and even a 540-degree parking camera.
The Geely EX5 pricing will be revealed soon, but Geely dealers across the country are already accepting reservations with fees as low as P 10,000. In fact, reserve one and get P 110,000 off whatever the final suggested retail price would be.
Go Geely go...
ReplyDeleteMiles better than byd atto 3
ReplyDeleteThe New BYD Atto 3 Premium can be had with a 200K discount, effectively pricing it at 1.598M. Geely PH better price the EX5 well and undercut the pricing of the country’s best selling EV if it wants to stage a comeback.
ReplyDeleteThat heavily discounted Atto 3 is the 2024 MY units
DeleteThe newer 2025 MY units aren't available at heavily discounted prices
2024 units are out of stock already, and they were discounted 250k. I’m talking about the updated Atto 3 Premium with the new Continental tires, piano black rear pillars, BYD rear emblem, powered tailgate, NFC key, and new color option. Go to a BYD dealer if you want to check.
DeleteHeard its going to be 1.85m less 110k. Very disappointing. Its selling points is supposed to be its cheaper and better than the Atto 3. In the Thai market, the Geely EX5 Pro will be on sale for THB859,000 (P1.46 million) while the Max gets a THB949,000 (P1.61 million) price tag. But I guess, they see us as a market they can overprice. Im actually not happy with BYD pricing as Thai, Australia and PH gets approximately the same pricing, but Thailand reported has a discount of almost 500k, and Australia slashed their prices across the board by around 100-150k. Only the Sealion 6 is well priced at around 350k cheaper for us. But because of Geely and MG not giving us competitive price, there is no pressure for BYD to lower their prices as well.
DeleteSaw from GMP’s FB Page that the EX5 ‘starts at 1.79M,’ with the 110K discount for reservations until March 31, it effectively starts at 1.68M. The New BYD Atto 3 Dynamic, with the ongoing 200K discount, beats the EX5’s pricing by almost 300K at 1.398M. In other ASEAN markets, as mentioned above, the EX5 undercuts the pricing of the Atto 3. This is not how you relaunch your brand in a market that you’ve let down not just once, but twice. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. With that shame in mind, Filipinos should not let themselves be fooled a third time by Geely.
DeleteAtto 3 sold here is the older 2024 MY export market version
DeleteThere's a newer one soon to be launched in China with updated exterior design
Geely EX5 is bigger and better than the old vanilla Atto 3 that's why its more expensive which is understandable as its newer, bigger and better.
Geely isn't into price war anymore as they don't want to sell vehicles at a loss profit and price like what BYD is doing.
Apparently, we're only getting the Max TOTL variant, ergo, we should compare this to the BYD Atto 3 Premium. The EX5 is 1.680M net while the A3P is 1.598M net, giving the EX5 a premium of 82K. The premium becomes palatable given that the EX5 is newer, bigger, and more tech-laden compared to the aging A3P. The only clear advantages the A3P has are Android Auto and the BYD Mobile App. It's still a big unknown whether we'll get local access to the Geely Mobile App for the EX5. Maybe the author can get word from Geely PH regarding this?
DeleteHow can we reserve without knowing the final price.
ReplyDeletePrecisely. For all we know they could price this thing at 2m. Ridiculous as heck.
DeleteGood luck Geely!
ReplyDeleteGeely selling this nice ev and the pathetic gx3.
ReplyDeleteGeely seems silent in the Philippines lately, likely after the incident of the Coolray sitting in the service area with milk tea and fries.
ReplyDeleteWell, they’re silent no more.
