Hybrid-Powered Lexus LX 700h Confirmed For The Philippines

In October of last year, Lexus made headlines by introducing the first-ever hybrid powertrain for its flagship SUV, the LX, in the form of the LX 700h. Seems we’re getting pretty close to a Philippine market launch based on documents filed by Lexus Philippines with the LTO.

To recall, the LX 700h keeps the same 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and 10-speed automatic combo found in the LX 600. However, it now gets a parallel hybrid system that integrates a Motor Generator (MG) with a clutch positioned between the engine and gearbox. The combined output is rated at 457 horsepower and 790 Nm of torque.

Moreover, unlike other Lexus hybrids, the Lexus LX 700h is first model to have both an alternator and starter. In the event of a hybrid system failure, the starter enables independent engine ignition, while the alternator powers the 12-volt auxiliary battery. This allows it to continue driving using only the engine. Even in this emergency driving mode, essential features such as the transfer case’s low range, ride height adjustment, active height control, and active traction control all remain fully operational.

With the nickel metal hydride hybrid battery encased in a waterproof structure located in the rear floor, it ensures that the Lexus LX 700h has impressive water fording capability—up to 700 mm—which makes it the same as the conventional LX. In the unlikely event that water does enter the tray, a water sensor positioned inside will detect it and alert the driver through a meter display.

In the said LTO documents, Lexus Philippines will offer two variants of the LX 700h—the LX 700h Premier and LX700h VIP. Both variants are confirmed to ride on 265/50 R 22 wheels. It’s very likely that the main difference would be in the seating with the LX 700h Premier getting three rows of seats, while the LX 700h VIP being a four-seater thanks to second-row captain’s chairs. Other possible differences would be down to the type of wheel finish, interior wood trim (open-pore or Takanoha), and the availability of a rear seat entertainment system with dual 11.4-inch screens.

Expect the LX 700h to be priced at around P 10-million given the current LX 600 Premier already goes for P 10.788-million, while the LX 600 F Sport sells for P 11.058-million.

  1. Why is Lexus using the nickel metal hydride battery and not the newer lithium ion?
