Mazda is reacting fast to the increased adoption of electrified vehicles in Southeast Asia by confirming that a slew of hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs are headed to the region between 2025 to 2027.
The news, which coincided with an announcement centering on the increased investment at their Auto Alliance Thailand (AAT) plant to build a new B-segment mild hybrid for global markets, the Japanese carmaker will also introduce five electrified models: two BEVs, one plug-in hybrid, and two hybrids for the region, particularly in Thailand.
With Thailand’s electrification progressing rapidly, Mazda will first introduce the Mazda6e. This makes Thailand the third major market, after China (where it’s known as the EZ-6) and Europe, to confirm the arrival of the Changan-engineered large sedan. Meanwhile, the discontinuation of the combustion engine Mazda6 in Australia has also led Mazda there to “seriously consider” bringing the Mazda6e in as well.
As for the rest of the planned electrified portfolio, Mazda has remained mum on the matter. Though it’s possible that the other BEV will be one of the first vehicles to use the new Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture, it’s more likely that it’ll be another re-skinned Changan vehicle. Trademark fillings with the name, “CX-6e” have already appeared previously This BEV SUV will be based off the Changan Deepal S05 (the Mazda6e is based on the Changan Deepal L07).
When it comes to the plug-in hybrid model, the CX-80 is the most likely candidate. The three-row PHEV has already made the motor show rounds as a preview model for the Malaysian and Singaporean markets with planned introductions later in the year. Its 2.5-liter Skayctiv-G engine already makes 192 horsepower and 261 Nm of torque, but thanks to a 175 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque electric motor, the combined outputs rise to 328 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. Its 17.8-kWh battery is enough for 67 kilometers of all-electric range.
Finally, when it comes to the two hybrids, this could come in the form of the CX-60 and CX-80—both of which are available with the 3.3-liter inline-6 equipped with the Mazda M Hybrid Boost technology. Or it could also point to the all-new CX-5 which is said to carry Mazda’s first full hybrid developed in-house.
