Meet The PV5: Kia's All-Electric Answer To The Hiace, Staria. And It's Being Considered For The Philippines

Kia is set not just to electrify its passenger vehicle line-up, but its light commercial vehicle line-up as well. Shown at the 2025 Kia EV Day is its first-ever offering: the PV5. As the first member of Kia’s PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) line-up, it’s being seriously considered for the Philippine market as Kia continues to embark on its upward journey to a more aspirational brand.

With a length of just 4,695 mm, the PV5 is smaller than a traditional van, yet its near-three-meter wheelbase (2,995 mm) means it’s between mid-sized MPVs such as the Toyota Zenix and full-sized vans like the Hyundai Staria. Key to its unique proportions is the use of a new battery-electric skateboard platform called the “E-GMP.S” (E-GMP for Service) which allows for flexibility in both vehicle body applications and manufacturing.

E-GMP.S standardizes an EV’s essential components such as batteries and motors allowing Kia to streamline development and reduce costs. It will also enable the carmaker to develop a wide array of PBVs with two larger models, PV7 and PV9 confirmed to be arriving soon.

Going back to the PV5, the initial specs have it powered by either a 51.5-kWh or 71.2-kWh battery giving a range of around 400 kilometers between charges. Its front-mounted electric motor, with 163 horsepower (120 kW) and 250 Nm of torque, delivers drive to the front wheels. Fast charging is also supported helping it go from 10 to 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes. Updates to its electronics, power management systems, and more can be delivered remotely via over-the-air updates.

Style-wise, the PV5 continues with Kia’s Opposites United philosophy. Transcending the styling of traditional MPVs or vans, it fuses the high-tech with ease of repair. For example, the curvaceous rear front bumper is made up of three sections, allowing the corners (the most vulnerable part), to be replaced independently of the front piece. The same goes for the compound headlights which place the DRLs high above the face, while the main beams are located lower.

Thanks to its clean sheet design, the PV5 utilizes durable, easy-to-clean, and sustainable materials inside with five vibrant colors schemes to be made available globally. Regardless of colorway, it offers a continuous flat floor allowing seating across three rows in a 2+2+3 configuration. Thoughtful design elements heighten its flexibility. These include a front passenger seat that sinks into the floor and simplified railings for the second- and third-row seats which means they can be removed easily.

The PV5’s “open box” concept means a minimalist control layout arranged horizontally. This allows for the efficient use of space, freeing up storage both at the top and bottom parts of the dashboard. In front of the driver is a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, while at the middle is a 12.9-inch infotainment screen powered by Android Automotive OS. The latter allows the accommodation of features unheard of in the commercial vehicle segment such as Digital Key and access to the app market.

All Kia PV5 models will be built off a new dedicated plant known as the “EVO Plant” in South Korea. Employing both traditional conveyor belt and cell-based production, it’s a flexible and efficient production process. Plans are also underway to establish a conversion center for customized vehicle production allowing Kia to produce more body styles including Cargo, Chassis Cab, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, Drop Side, Freezer, and Camper models.

PV5 production will commence in the second half of the year with Korea and Europe being the first markets to roll it out. It will be gradually launched to more markets, likely including the Philippines, by 2026.
