Hyundai Calls The Insteroid EV An Automotive Glitch

Share this on:

Remember the funky Inster? Hyundai’s sub-compact EV SUV? What happens if you add some musculature to that cutesy look? You get the Insteroid—a new show car that’s meant to showcase the emotional experience that you could get with electric cars.

Hyundai calls the Insteroid a “glitch” in that it merges videogame styling with real-world engineering. Now, the full debut is happening in a couple of days, but before then, Hyundai did tease it and boy, does it heavily lean on youthfulness.

Outside, the Insteroid gets a racing game-inspired styling complete with extended and vented wheel arch vents, 21-inch wheels, and a giant rear spoiler. Inside, Hyundai promises it’ll come with plenty of fun details from the control buttons (one looks to be a WRC-style drift handle) to the instrument cluster too. And of course, it’ll have the signature pixel LEDs too.

Now, why choose the Inster as the base for this showcar? Well, it’s pretty simple, really. Hyundai says the Inster has been a huge success in its home market of Korea as well as Europe.

Debuting in June of last year, the Inster is Hyundai’s smallest and most affordable EV. Itself, it’s based off the Casper but with an extended body and wheelbase making it sit between traditional A- and B-segment vehicles. Powering it is a single electric motor with either 97 or 115 horsepower, while torque is rated at 147 Nm. It’s also mighty efficient, delivering up to 355 kilometers of range despite its modest battery size (42-kWh or 49-kWh).

No word if the Insteroid will get additional power as a showcar, but don’t be surprised if Hyundai will be able to shoehorn a more powerful motor (even a dual one) in.
