The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) highlighted the role of ultra-low viscosity oils and specialized lubriants in improving overall drivetrain efficiency at a JAMA Lube Oil Seminar hosted by Petron.
JAMA experts said that “thinner” engine oils such as 0W-8, 0W-16, and 0W-20 can improve fuel economy by up to three percent. While this may seem minimal, the savings add up significantly over time.
Beyond fuel efficiency, modern low-friction lubricants also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing vehicle emissions. Data from JAMA indicates that using ultra-low viscosity oils could reduce CO2 emissions by 373,000 tons annually in Japan. In tropical countries like Indonesia, the figure is roughly 258,000 tons per year in in-use vehicles and 11,700 tons for new vehicles.
A similar shift in the Philippines, particularly in traffic-heavy areas like Metro Manila and Cebu, could significantly improve air quality, JAMA said.
Additionally, recent innovations in additive technology have improved the thermal and oxidation stability of these oils, extending engine life and improving overall efficiency. Plus, these ultra-low viscosity oils are being developed with stricter Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions in mind.
As the country embraces more electrified vehicles, JAMA also says to watch out for the specialized lubricants required by these types of vehicles. These could help in optimizing the performance of the electric motor (including its cooling) as well as transmission efficiency.
For example, hybrid engine-specific engine oils are specially formulated to endure the repeated on/off cycles as hybrids tend to switch from electric to combustion mode and back.
Meanwhile, when it comes to BEVs, more advanced EVs require liquid cooling to bring down the significant heat generated by the EV motor and motor components. They may also minimize drivetrain energy loss and improve thermal connectivity for faster charging.
All in all, JAMA encourages that Filipinos should check their car’s recommended oil grade especially as more carmakers continue to develop vehicles with low viscosity oils in mind.
As the country’s leading oil company, Petron Corporation offers a range of lubricants that meet the exacting specifications of JAMA. These lubricants are engineered to provide superior engine protection, improved fuel economy, and lower emissions.
