New Car Sales Rose 10 Percent In January As Premium Brands Struggle

Category: , , |

New car sales are off to a bullish start with a 10 percent year-on-year increase. Based on the joint report of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA), a total of 37,604 vehicles were sold in January, 10.4 percent higher than 34,060 units sold in January 2024.

Driving the growth in January sales was the commercial vehicle (CV) segment with 29,875 units sold, up by 16.6 percent from 25,614 units in the previous year. On the other hand, sales of the passenger car (PC) segment, declined by 8.5 percent to 7,729 units in January from 8,446 units in the same month a year ago.

For the first time, the CAMPI-TMA report also broke down the number of electrified vehicles sold. Last January, a total of 1,600 electrified vehicles were sold. Out of that, 1,445 units were hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), 146 were battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and nine were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Brands such as BYD, Chevrolet, Subaru, and Tesla are not members of CAMPI or TMA so their results are not reflected here.

Toyota continued its reign as the country’s best-selling auto brand with a 48 percent market share last January by selling 18,078 units. Mitsubishi continues in second place with a 19.6 percent share (7,374 units). Nissan regained third place with a 6.29 percent share (2,366 units) with Suzuki in fourth with a 4.74 percent share (1,781 units).
