Toyota will soon establish the Toyota Circular Factory—the first-ever operation within global Toyota that carefully and systematically processes vehicles at the end of their life to maximize the environmental benefits of recycling, repurposing, and remanufacturing.
Located at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK (TMUK)’s Burnaston plant, it will begin activities in the third quarter of 2025. The initiative will coincide with TMUK Burnaston site’s principal activity of producing the Toyota Corolla for the European market.
Toyota Circular Factory refers to the recycling activities. It’s structuring its approach to end-of-life vehicle processing around three key areas: re-usable parts, commodity items that can be re-manufactured, and materials that can be recycled.
Following a validation process, re-usable parts will be reintroduced into the market through retailers or parts distributors. Commodity items such as batteries and wheels will be assessed for their potential to be re-manufactured, re-purposed, or recycled.
Toyota also intends to recycle raw materials such as copper, aluminum, steel, and plastic. These recycled materials would then replace virgin materials as much as possible in the production of new parts for new vehicles.
Toyota anticipates that they’ll be recycling around 10,000 vehicles annually which will give new life to around 120,000 parts, recover 300 tons of high-purity plastic, and 8,200 tons of steel among others.
After its implementation at the Burnaston site, Toyota has plans to roll out the Toyota Circular Factory concept to more sites, starting first in Europe as part of their commitment to carbon neutrality.
