After entering the sub-compact sedan with the Seal 5 DM-i and pickup truck segment with the BYD Shark DMO, BYD Cars Philippines is entering yet another hotly-contested segment: MPVs. Their entry, the BYD eMax 7 (stylized as eMAX 7), combines all-electric mobility with seating across three rows.

The history of the eMax 7 isn’t as clear-cut as say the Seagull or Atto 3. Like the Sealion 6, this one started life as a different model altogether—the Song Max—in China as early as 2017. Since then, it’s gained heavily refreshed styling inside and out under the direction of head designer Wolfgang Egger (of Audi and Alfa Romeo fame).

For the Philippine market, the eMax 7 comes in two variants: the eMax 7 Standard and the eMax 7 Superior Captain. Exterior-wise, they’re the same with the Dragon Face front-end design and long roof silhouette. Features include LED headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels with a machine cut design. The top-of-the-line Superior Captain gets a panoramic moonroof (the glass doesn’t open), roof rails, and a power tailgate.

Underneath, the eMax 7 rides on the BYD 3.0 e-Platform with a front-mounted, front-wheel drive permanent synchronous electric motor. The eMax 7 Standard offers 163 horsepower, while the eMax 7 Superior Captain has 204 horsepower. Both have 310 Nm of torque and a 180 km/h top speed, but the 0-100 km/h sprint for the Superior Captain is quoted at just 8.6 seconds to the Standard’s 10.1 seconds. Battery-wise, it uses the Lithium Iron Phosphate Blade Battery, with the eMax 7 Standard having a 55.4-kWh size (420 kilometers range) and the eMax 7 Superior Captain having 71.8-kWh (530 kilometers range).

Inside, the eMax 7 is differentiated by the number of seats. The Standard has a 7-seater capacity in a 2+3+2 configuration, while the Superior Captain has a 6-seater capacity in a 2+2+2 configuration. Regardless, leather seats, a 5-inch LCD display nestled between analog gauges, a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 6-speaker system are standard. The Superior Captain, meanwhile, gets power front seats with ventilation, ambient lighting, and wireless charging.

The eMax 7 comes with complete active and passive safety features from six SRS airbags to 3-point ELR seatbelts for all occupants to ABS with EBD and electronic stability control. Both variants have 360-degree camera and rear parking sensors, but only the Superior Captain is equipped with the BYD DiPilot ADAS system with lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

The BYD eMax 7 comes in four colors: Quartz Blue, Cosmos Black, Crystal White, and Harbour Gray. Final pricing will be revealed at the Manila International Auto Show on April 10, but image pricing pegs it at around P 1.4 to P 1.8-million.

  1. Wow! bright and early on a Monday! I like the adjustable headrests. I think it makes for a less-claustrophobic place for second-row occupants. Drivers who've had their license renewed many times can live without the advanced assistance features of the more expensive car but, a powered liftgate would have made the Standard trim perfect.

  2. these BYD vehicles have the worst 2nd~3rd row seats due to the battery placement. You will have knee pain even for short drives.

    1. It is what it is. The M6 rides on a recycled platform to keep costs low. This vehicle was not initially designed as an EV, hence the analog instrument cluster.

    1. Really? BYDs are known for their soft suspensions, too soft for my liking in fact.

  6. More Logical if they bring in the DMi Version instead of this especially for the lower variant with bench seats

  7. I think for Philippine market, the plan all along is eMAX 7 at pure EV for P1.5 - P1.7M and then bring in Denza 9 as PHEV not later than June.

  8. Mahal if they sell it at 1.5 to 1.7m.... they have to lower it to 1m
