Without a doubt, the Foton Toplander is the mid-sized 7-seater SUV segment’s most pleasant surprise. Together with the TransVan and Traveller MPVs, it’s responsible for elevating Foton from just a workhorse brand to a bonafide family-oriented one. We’ve driven the 4x2 EX A/T extensively once before but given the chance to drive it once more (now within the confines of Metro Manila), we’ve re-discovered 4 things about this peculiar SUV.

The pickup-based passenger vehicle (PPV) segment is currently the hottest contested segment in the country and everyone wants to get into the game. While the Foton Toplander has had its shining moments, the lack of an automatic gearbox limited its appeal. Two years since its Philippine launch, Foton has finally given its SUV a two-pedal layout and you know what? It’s worth the wait.

Foton Philippines is pushing its bid to be recognized as a mainstream car brand in the Philippines by launching the much-awaited automatic transmission variant of its Toplander midsized SUV.

Normally, it’s hard to separate a carmaker from its country of origin: Toyota is from Japan, Hyundai is from Korea, Tata is from India, and Foton is from China. Subsequently, there’s some temptation to judge how good or not-so-good a car is based on where it’s made. But you’re not going to read any of that. Instead, you’re only going to read about how the Toplander performs on its own merit; how it performs as a mid-sized SUV. Known more for their commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, it’s hard to imagine what lengths Foton had to go through to design and engineer their first-ever SUV. Yet, the Toplander easily passes all the requirements of a would-be Filipino buyer.

Foton Philippines is adding two new lifestyle variants to its Toplander SUV range: the Toplander Executive and Toplander Xtreme. Previewed at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) last week, these two new variants are designed to cater to particular lifestyles and interests, especially if you find the regular Toplander just a tad too tame.

Earlier this month, we took a closer look at Foton’s first-ever SUV, the Toplander, in, of all places, the USA. Though their venue to globally launch the Toplander or Sauvana as they call it elsewhere seemed odd, it merely cements the Chinese brand’s strong partnership with American diesel specialist, Cummins. In fact, Foton is single-handedly the biggest customer of the 2.8 ISF light-duty diesel engine, accounting to about half of Cummins’s annual output (200,000 out of 400,000 units). But what makes the Cummins 2.8 ISF so special? Well, that’s what we found out next.

During one otherwise uninteresting afternoon, I received a rather peculiar phone call. “Sir, would you be interested in driving the Foton Toplander in Indiana?” Given the quality of our cellular service in Manila, I was almost sure I misheard the other person on the line. “Sure,” I said. When will you need me to submit my Chinese Visa requirements? “No sir. You won’t need it. This drive will be in Indiana, USA.” A long pause ensued. A Foton drive in the Midwestern US? They must be kidding, I thought. Lo-and-behold, two weeks later, I was actually on a 31-hour plane ride to Columbus, Indiana to see the Toplander.

Foton Charges into SUV Market with Toplander

Foton is expanding its line-up with the unveil of not one, not two, but three new offerings at its annual Big Show which is happening now until tomorrow, October 4, 2015 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. The biggest commercial vehicle manufacturer in China, Foton has quickly established itself as a formidable commercial vehicle brand in the Philippines despite being established just eight years ago. Headlining the charge is the Toplander.

Foton is getting ready to field its first-ever Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the Philippines with the market launch of the Toplander. Expected to be priced competitively, the Toplander is poised to steal sales away from the Asian Utility Vehicle (AUV) and entry-level MPV and SUV market.
